Started back in May, menthol cigarettes were banned in the European Union and UK, under the European Union Revised Tobacco Products Directive (TPD).

Already decided in 2016, the topic has almost been forgotten for many. But the long announced amendments to the EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD2) will come into with new, stricter regulations for the sale of tobacco products and tobacco-like products.

A significant part of these changes relates to the addition of flavorings in tobacco products. More precisely, aromas that change or mask the actual tobacco taste. And this also includes the addition of menthol or menthol flavor. The new guidelines apply to tobacco products such as cigarettes, cigarillos and rolling tobacco.

The reasoning behind the ban is the claim that flavoring, especially menthol, in cigarettes and tobacco will encourage more young people to start smoking.
Menthol for e-cigarettes will remain available

But what does it all look like with e-cigarettes? Liquids with menthol or a similar "cooling aroma", such as mint, are particularly popular within vaping. Some even vape nothing other than spearmint or menthol flavor. And vapers in particular, who have completely stopped nicotine with the help of the e-cigarette and only vape nicotine-free liquids, swear by the fresh menthol liquids.

Menthol or menthol-like liquids usually deliver a so-called "throat hit" even without the addition of nicotine - that is, the noticeable feeling in the throat that simulates that you are vaping nicotine, even if none is available. This finally helps many former smokers to overcome nicotine addiction.
Time to switch to e-cigarettes?

The good news: The new regulation only applies to tobacco products and does not apply to so-called "related products", which, according to the legal text, includes the e-cigarette.

This means that basically nothing changes for vapers and they can continue to enjoy liquids with menthol, mint or similar flavors. Smokers, on the other hand, have to think about alternatives. So it is the perfect time to think about making a switch.

In the US, efforts to also ban menthol cigarettes has also been gaining steam in several states, as well as a federal proposal to ban flavors in all tobacco products including e-cigarettes.
